Medical Protective: Focusing on Protection.
Our History
In 1899, a group of physicians in Fort Wayne, Indiana, banded together to defend themselves from a growing phenomenon – professional medical liability lawsuits. As the group of physicians grew, they realized that the claims defense business was better handled full time by experts. Therefore, in 1913, the physicians handed over the reigns to Byron H. Somers and Charles M. Niezer, both attorneys, who served as The Medical Protective Company’s (“Medical Protective’s”) first officers. In a short amount of time, Medical Protective became the largest provider of medical malpractice insurance for healthcare providers in the country.
From the beginning, Medical Protective has played an important role in the development of the medical malpractice laws in the United States. Starting in 1904, the Company regularly published a document entitled "Brief on Malpractice Law," which set forth substantially all of the major principles of medical malpractice law across the United States. The publication was distributed to attorneys defending medical malpractice actions and to the American Medical Association to educate physicians on medical malpractice laws. Medical Protective continued regularly publishing the brief for the next 50 years. By 1940, Medical Protective had defended nearly 54,000 claims and lawsuits, providing the company with unequaled knowledge and experience on handling medical malpractice claims.
For nearly a century after founding, Medical Protective remained a family-owned company until it was bought by General Electric (“GE”) in 1998. In 2005, Medical Protective found its ideal owner in Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway. Mr. Buffett’s long-term strategy, combined with his expertise in business and insurance, has allowed MedPro to re-enter markets that had been left dormant during the GE days.
